This richly hand-coloured botanical woodcut is from Adam Lonitzer’s Kreuterbuch, a landmark herbal first published in 1557 and widely reissued throughout the late 16th century. The recto and verso of this folio illustrate various forms of turnips and wild radishes (Rapum Rotundum, Rapum Longum, Rapum Sylvestre), accompanied by detailed poetic and medical commentary in early modern German. The vivid colouring and fine linework highlight key morphological features—leaves, roots, flowers, and seed pods—essential for plant identification and medicinal use in early modern Europe. Lonitzer’s Kreuterbuch became one of the most influential German herbals of its time, blending empirical observation with folkloric remedies and classical sources. This edition was likely printed in Frankfurt in the 1580s.

Adam Lonitzer (1528–1586) was a German botanist, physician, and naturalist renowned for his contributions to early botanical literature. Born in Marburg, he became a professor of mathematics and later city physician in Frankfurt. His best-known work, Kreuterbuch, was based on earlier texts but substantially expanded with new commentary, empirical detail, and vivid illustrations. Lonitzer’s work bridged medieval herbal knowledge and Renaissance scientific inquiry, making a lasting impact on pharmacology and natural history.
