167 Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) – Matadors Entering the Arena – Lithograph from Toros y Toreros (1961)

This expressive lithograph by Pablo Picasso, dated 8.7.59 and later published in the 1961 edition of Toros y Toreros, shows a procession of matadors entering the brightly lit arena. Picasso uses bold, gestural strokes and vivid primary colors — reds, yellows, blues, and greens — to define the figures in motion. The central figure on horseback leads the group from the darkness of the passageway into the brilliant sunlight, symbolizing both the ritual and drama of the bullfight. The dramatic contrast between light and shadow heightens the theatrical atmosphere.
Part of the Toros y Toreros series, this work was published by Maeght Éditeur in Paris, pairing Picasso's artwork with a bullfighting narrative by Luis Miguel Dominguín. The series exemplifies Picasso’s lifelong engagement with Spanish identity and the emotional extremes of the corrida.
