This set of two original hand-coloured engravings features Aquilegia Vulgaris (Common Columbine) and Crocus Autumnalis (Autumnal Crocus). They are from James Sowerby’s renowned botanical series English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published by J. Davis in London between 1790 and 1814. This first edition of the extensively illustrated work is celebrated for its scientific precision and artistic finesse, presenting detailed images of British flora.

James Sowerby was an English naturalist and botanical illustrator, widely recognized for his prolific contributions to botanical art. His detailed and accurate plant illustrations in English Botany significantly advanced the understanding and appreciation of British plant species.
