This poignant lithograph depicts two young orphaned girls accompanied by a large dog, set in a naturalistic outdoor scene marked by a grave and a rugged background. The standing girl gently rests her hand on the shoulder of the seated girl, who looks contemplative and sorrowful. The print conveys themes of loss, protection, and innocence, reflecting 19th-century Romantic sensibilities. It was published in the Volks-Kalender für 1845 und für 1846, an illustrated almanac issued in one volume by Karl Steffens and published by M. Simion in Berlin in 1845 and 1846. The volume contains 25 sheets including 7 steel engravings, 1 wood engraving, a folding railway map of Central Europe with steamship routes, a calendar, weather reports, anecdotes, genealogies, and detailed listings of fairs and markets in the Prussian monarchy and neighboring cities. The binding is half leather with reinforced corners and a titled spine. The book shows wear including rubbed capitals and corners, partially split inner joints, and moderate to heavy foxing and browning of the paper, with some tears on the railway map.

Though the artist of this specific lithograph remains unknown, the print exemplifies the detailed and expressive style popular in mid-19th-century German print culture.
