This antique botanical engraving titled Botany. Tab. XIII – Genera of Mosses was published in 1785 as part of George Henry Millar’s monumental work A New, Complete and Universal System of Natural History, issued by Alexander Hogg in London. The copperplate engraving illustrates a variety of moss genera including Byssi, Confervæ, Tremellæ, Coralloides, Ussæ, Lichenoides, Mnium, and Sphagnum. Each specimen is carefully labeled and drawn to reflect the taxonomic classification and microscopic detail typical of Enlightenment-era botanical study. This plate was printed on laid paper, a common medium before the advent of wove paper in the late 18th century.

Isaac Taylor (1730–1807) was an English engraver and illustrator noted for his contributions to scientific and encyclopedic works. His precise copper engravings accompanied texts intended to educate and inform a growing audience interested in natural science. Taylor’s skill in rendering anatomical and zoological detail helped bring credibility and visual appeal to major 18th-century publications.
