129 Isaac Taylor (1730–1807) – Birds: Eagle, Falcon, Dodo, Caracara, Grus Balearica – Copperplate Engraving from Millar’s Natural History (1785)
This original copperplate engraving, titled Birds. Tab. I., was published in 1785 as part of A New, Complete and Universal System of Natural History by George Henry Millar, issued by Alexander Hogg at the King's Arms, No. 16, Paternoster Row, London. The print displays a detailed array of bird species, including the Eagle, Guinea Hen, Falcon Gentil, Caracara, Butcher Bird, Dodo, Grus Balearica (a crowned crane), Coracias, and Corvus Aquaticus. Each species is clearly labeled and finely rendered, reflecting the Enlightenment-era fascination with exotic fauna and taxonomic clarity. The plate was printed on laid paper, which can be identified by its characteristic ribbed texture and was typical before the widespread adoption of wove paper in the 1790s.
