Dated 1687, the map illustrates the strategic military layout of Castelnuovo (now Herceg Novi, Montenegro), highlighting its impressive fortifications, surrounding mountainous terrain, and naval presence in the waters of the Adriatic Sea. The engraving includes a decorative cartouche with the inscription "Pianta con alzata della rinomata Città e Fortezza di Castelnuovo in Dalmatia delineata al naturale e trasmessa dal Campo 15 Settembre 1687," indicating its depiction from the perspective of military observation during the conflicts of the late 17th century.
Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi was a master engraver and publisher based in Rome, known for his detailed maps and city plans during the Baroque period. His publishing house, Calcografia Camerale, became one of the largest and most respected cartographic producers in Europe. De Rossi's works are admired for their precision, artistic composition, and historical significance.
