137 William MacKenzie (1794–1868) – Set of 2 Plates – Fishes: Sharks, Rays, Gobies, Wolf Fishes – Hand-Coloured Engravings (1859–1868)

This set includes two original hand-coloured engravings depicting rare and distinctive fish species from multiple orders. The first plate features members of Chondropterygii, including the White Shark (Squalus Carcharias), Angel Fish, Spotted Torpedo, and Royal Ray—all rendered with anatomical precision and labelled in Latin. The second plate presents species from Anacanthopterygii, such as the Black Goby, Butterfly Fish, and the formidable Wolf Fish (Anarrhichas lupus), alongside a large deep-sea Anglerfish with exaggerated features. These plates exemplify the visual clarity and taxonomic detail typical of Victorian natural history publishing and were issued by William MacKenzie as part of his monumental natural sciences compendium
.
William MacKenzie, a 19th-century British publisher based in London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, was known for producing grand illustrated volumes. His natural history works were particularly admired for their visual appeal and educational value. The engravings in this set reflect the meticulous style typical of the era and were likely prepared by skilled anonymous illustrators under MacKenzie’s direction.
