8 Jean-Baptiste Louis Clouet (1730–1790) – Map of Europe / L’Europe divisée en ses principaux États – Large Copperplate Engraving (Venice, c.1775)

This large-format copperplate map titled L’Europe divisée en ses principaux États suivant les nouvelles observations astronomiques presents a highly detailed and scientifically updated representation of Europe. Based on astronomical calculations, the map delineates political boundaries and major capitals, with national territories hand-colored and coastlines finely engraved.
The map was created by Jean-Baptiste Louis Clouet, known as Sr. Janvier, one of the most prominent French geographers of the late Enlightenment. It was reissued by Venetian publisher François Santini as part of his efforts to disseminate French cartographic knowledge in Italy. Janvier’s maps were known for their clarity, geographic precision, and updated projections. The decorative cartouche and ornate engraving style reflect the aesthetic sophistication of the period. This edition was published in Venice around 1775.
