20 Nicolas Sanson (1600–1667) – Map of the Succession States of Cleves and Jülich / Estats de la Succession de Cleves et Iuliers – Large Copperplate Engraving (Paris, 1648)

This early political map titled Estats de la Succession de Cleves et Iuliers depicts the ecclesiastical and secular territories in the central-western Holy Roman Empire, including the Archbishoprics and Electorates of Mainz, Trier, and Cologne, the lands of Hesse and the Wetterau region, and parts of Franconia and Westphalia. Centered on the contested succession lands of Cleves and Jülich, the map reflects the complex territorial structure following the Thirty Years' War.
The elegant cartouche in the upper right names Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville, royal geographer to the King of France and one of the founding figures of French scientific cartography. Known for his precision and minimalist style, Sanson broke with Dutch decorative conventions to emphasize geographic accuracy and political clarity. This map was published in Paris in 1648 with royal privilege.
