This set of two vibrant chromolithographs originates from Adalbert Seitz’s monumental entomological series Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde (The Macrolepidoptera of the World), published between 1909 and 1915.

The plates present highly detailed depictions of various species from the Catocala and Saturnia genera. These scientifically precise illustrations capture both the dorsal and ventral views of butterflies and moths, showcasing intricate wing patterns, body structure, and subtle coloration — essential for the accurate identification and classification of Lepidoptera species across the Palearctic region.

Adalbert Seitz (1860–1938) was a renowned German entomologist and lepidopterist. He is best known for Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde, a comprehensive multi-volume study on butterflies and moths from around the globe. His work remains one of the most significant references in entomology, featuring detailed descriptions and vivid illustrations. Seitz's contributions greatly advanced the scientific understanding and classification of Lepidoptera.
