This set of two exquisite hand-colored engravings originates from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, a foundational publication in the history of botanical illustration and science.

Left Plate (No. 2361):

Depicts Corydalis (likely Corydalis cava or a close relative), a graceful woodland plant with nodding blue flowers and intricately veined foliage. The elegant arching stem and finely rendered floral anatomy demonstrate the precision typical of Curtis’s legacy.

Right Plate (No. 2362):

Features Solanum nigrum (Black Nightshade), a plant known both for its medicinal properties and toxic potential. The engraving highlights its sharp-pointed, ovate leaves and small yellow star-shaped flowers nestled in leaf axils.

These botanical engravings, published in 1832, were illustrated by John Curtis and engraved by Weddell. The plates reflect the educational and aesthetic mission of the magazine: to render plants with both scientific accuracy and visual beauty.
