140 William Curtis (1746–1799) – Set of 2 Botanical Prints – Plantago maritima & Ribes rubrum – Hand-Colored Engravings (1832)

This set of two finely detailed hand-colored botanical engravings originates from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, one of the most influential and long-running botanical publications of the 19th century.
Left Plate (No. 2367):
Depicts Plantago maritima, commonly known as sea plantain. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are elegantly rendered alongside a delicate inflorescence, showcasing the plant’s coastal habitat adaptation.
Right Plate (No. 2368):
Features Ribes rubrum, or red currant, with vibrant green foliage and cascading flower clusters. The engraving highlights both botanical structure and ornamental beauty, including dissected flower details.
Originally published in 1832, these plates reflect the magazine’s commitment to combining scientific clarity with artistic excellence. The illustrations were prepared by John Curtis and engraved by William Watts, continuing the legacy initiated by William Curtis himself.
