22 Adam Perelle (1640–1695) – Map of Delineatio Regiae Urbis Rugae et Obsidionis / Siege of Riga by the Muscovite Army – Large Copperplate Engraving (1696)
This highly detailed copperplate engraving, titled Delineatio Regiae Urbis Rugae et Obsidionis, depicts the 1656 siege of Riga during the Russo-Swedish War. Created by Adam Perelle and published posthumously in 1696 by J.E. Dahlberg in Nuremberg, the work offers an elaborate bird’s-eye view of the fortified city of Riga, encircled by Russian forces under Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich. The engraving vividly portrays troop formations, artillery bombardment, and fleet movements along the Daugava River (Duna Fluvius), with visual annotations and two Latin cartouches explaining military positions and commanders.
The map emphasizes the role of Swedish Field Marshal Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, who successfully repelled the Muscovite siege. This work blends the precision of military cartography with the dramatic flair typical of Adam Perelle’s style.
Adam Perelle (1640–1695) was a French engraver and draughtsman, son of Gabriel Perelle. Known for his topographical views, battle scenes, and cityscapes, he worked extensively for Louis XIV, documenting the grandeur of France and its military exploits. His engravings are celebrated for their clarity, decorative elegance, and historical value.
