27 Johann Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Double Hemisphere World Map – Typus Orbis Terrarum – Hand-Colored Engraving (1717)

"Typus Orbis Terrarum"
This decorative double hemisphere map presents a beautifully stylized vision of the world as known in the early 18th century. The map displays the continents with clear demarcations and Latin place names, reflecting geographical knowledge of the time. The corners are adorned with classical allegorical figures, wind deities, and mythological references. North America is only partially defined, and Terra Australis is shown as a large, mysterious landmass — a hallmark of early cartographic imagination.
Johann Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), also known as Weigel the Elder, was a prominent German engraver, publisher, and art dealer active in Nuremberg. He is best known for his detailed maps and illustrations, which combined baroque artistry with geographic precision. His work significantly contributed to the dissemination of cartographic and scientific knowledge in early modern Europe.
