"Valencena , Qvondam Cygnorvm Vallis, Vrbs Han: Perelegas , Et Valde Magnifica."

This original hand-coloured copperplate engraving offers a bird’s-eye view of the Spanish city of Valencia, labeled in Latin as Valentia quondam Edetanorum urbs, once the principal city of the ancient Edetani. The layout reveals an intricate street network enclosed by fortified walls and water channels. Characteristic elements of Civitates Orbis Terrarum include heraldic shields, Renaissance figures in local costume, and visual emphasis on the urban fabric.

The engraving was published in the second volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1575), the landmark city atlas compiled by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. This vast work became the largest and most influential city book of the early modern period, providing a visual chronicle of Europe’s major urban centers. The map captures Valencia at the height of its architectural and economic development in the late 16th century.
