"Slvsa, Tevtonicae Flandriae Opp Admodvm Elegans"
This original hand-coloured copperplate engraving shows the fortified Flemish city of Sluis (Sluysa), with its dense urban layout, surrounding waterways, and defensive walls. Decorative features include sailing ships, cultivated fields, coats of arms, and a foreground couple in period dress. The map is accompanied by extensive Latin commentary on the verso, with historical references to Bruges, the canal system, and the city’s strategic role in the region.
This engraving was published in the second volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1575), the monumental city atlas compiled by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg in Cologne. Known as the largest city book ever printed, the work consists of six volumes and 546 engravings depicting the world’s most prominent cities. The engravings were executed by leading artists and cartographers of the era, including Frans Hogenberg, Joris Hoefnagel, and his son Jacob.
