This original hand-coloured botanical engraving comes from Phythologia (1662), Johann Joachim Becher’s influential 17th-century herbal. The plate features three distinct trees: Platanus (Plane Tree), Acer Maior (Maple), and Fraxinus (Ash). Each plant is illustrated with detailed leaves, fruits, and seeds, accompanied by their Latin and German names. The reverse side includes poetic medicinal text and scientific commentary, following Becher’s characteristic blend of natural philosophy and empirical plant study.

Johann Joachim Becher was a German physician, alchemist, and naturalist, widely known for his contributions to early chemistry and botany. His work reflects the scientific curiosity of the 17th century, merging empirical observation with speculative theories of nature.
