90 David Roberts (1796–1864) – Set of 2 Architectural Views – Mosques of Cairo – Tinted Lithographs by Louis Haghe from The Holy Land... – F.G. Moon Edition (1848–49)

This set includes two rare original tinted lithographs by David Roberts, lithographed by Louis Haghe, from the monumental folio edition The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia. Both works were published by F.G. Moon in London — Entrance to the Mosque of Sultan El Ghoree dated August 1st, 1848, and Interior of the Mosque El Mooristan dated January 1st, 1849.
David Roberts travelled extensively through Egypt and the Near East from 1838 to 1839, producing hundreds of sketches which he later developed into watercolours. These became the basis for the series of 247 lithographs issued between 1842 and 1849. The present prints reflect Roberts’s fascination with Islamic architecture and Cairo’s rich urban landscape.
The first view depicts the elaborate entrance and twisted minaret of Sultan El Ghoree’s mosque, set in a lively street scene. The second offers a dramatic interior view of the ruined Mosque El Mooristan, capturing crumbling stone columns and local figures amid architectural remains. Both scenes exemplify Roberts’s architectural precision and atmospheric depth, and they remain among the most iconic images of 19th-century Egypt.
