137 William MacKenzie (1794–1868) – Set of 2 Plates – Amphibia: Tree Frog, Horned Toad, Spade-Foot, Surinam Toad, Midwife Toad & Tadpoles – Hand-Colored Engravings (c.1860s)

This set of two hand-colored engravings presents a diverse selection of amphibians from the order Anura, including both adult frogs and toads as well as larval stages (tadpoles). Featured species include the Hyla Tree Frog, Ceratophrys Horned Toad, Surinam Toad (Pipa americana), Midwife Toad (Alytes obstetricans), and European Spade-Foot (Pelobates fuscus). Accompanying them are finely rendered illustrations of tadpole development, highlighting the metamorphosis process.
The upper plate focuses on the reproductive cycle of amphibians and the external morphology of adult frogs, including vocal sac displays. The lower plate centers on the anatomy and skin patterns of terrestrial toads, some of which exhibit remarkable breeding behaviors. These illustrations are part of William MacKenzie’s larger zoological compendium, intended to educate Victorian-era readers about the natural world with scientific precision and colorful artistry.
