119 Francesco Bartolozzi (1727–1815) after Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino (1591–1666) – Woman with a Book – Etching (c. 1765)

This finely executed etching depicts a young woman seated at a table, holding open a large book and gesturing toward its pages. Her serene expression and elegant dress reflect the influence of classical ideals in Guercino’s drawings, which Bartolozzi masterfully transferred into print. The soft yet precise linework captures the contemplative atmosphere of learning or poetic reflection. The print was produced as part of a celebrated series of engravings based on drawings by Guercino.
The work was published by Francesco Bartolozzi in London in 1765. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, hailed from the town of Cento in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. He worked in Rome between 1621 and 1623, where he experienced his most productive and influential period of artistic creativity.
