This engraving depicts the port of Smyrna (modern-day İzmir, Turkey), a key Ottoman harbor, where French naval vessels are seen anchored beneath a dramatic sky. The scene includes sailing ships, mosque minarets, and a fortress in the background, highlighting Smyrna’s historical significance as a maritime hub. The work belongs to the France Maritime series, edited by Amédée Gréhan and published in Paris in the mid-19th century to showcase France’s naval reach.

The drawing is attributed to Coweeley, while the engraving was executed by François Rouargue, one of the most prolific French engravers of maritime and historical subjects. The plate was printed by Chardon, official printer of the French Navy.
