82 Pietro Rossini (1635–1702) – Colosseo – Engraved View from Il Mercurio Errante delle Grandezze di Roma (1789)

This engraving depicts the Colosseum in Rome as it appeared in the 18th century, partially ruined yet monumental in form. It is marked "PAG. 24" and "TOM. I", indicating its place within the first volume of Il Mercurio Errante delle Grandezze di Roma, and numbered "10" in the upper corner as part of a sequential plate series. Originally written by Pietro Rossini, the guidebook was republished in 1789 under the editorship of Fausto Amidei. In this edition, the work was reissued in an updated format with detailed engravings adapted to the tastes of 18th-century travelers, particularly those undertaking the Grand Tour. The print presents the architectural remains with clarity and topographical accuracy, serving both aesthetic and educational purposes.
Pietro Rossini (1635–1702) was an Italian antiquarian and author, noted for his detailed topographical and historical descriptions of Rome. His guidebooks offered a blend of literary narrative and scholarly commentary and were widely read by Grand Tour visitors. The 1789 edition, edited and published by Fausto Amidei in Rome, introduced newly commissioned engravings to accompany Rossini’s original text.
