This finely executed hand-coloured aquatint from 1813 depicts a dramatic natural scene of two lions poised in a lush wilderness, awaiting their prey near a waterfall. The composition captures the tense moment before the hunt, with strong contrast between the vigilant stance of the male and the crouched patience of the female. The background features rich atmospheric detail with mountainous terrain and flowing water.

The engraving was originally created for Orme’s Foreign Field Sports, a celebrated British publication edited by Samuel Hewitt, which featured a wide array of global hunting and animal subjects. The original artwork was drawn by the British artist Palmer (active early 19th century) and engraved by Henry Dubourg (active c. 1810–1830), both known for their skill in aquatint rendering and naturalistic imagery. Published in London in 1813, the piece reflects the 19th-century fascination with exotic wildlife and landscapes.
