The engraving depicts the Battle of Engelen, which took place near 's-Hertogenbosch on July 13, 1587, during the Eighty Years' War. Troops commanded by Count Philip of Hohenlohe defend a fortified redoubt near the village of Engelen against Spanish forces. The image shows intense battle formations, cavalry, and artillery, as well as two ships on the riverfront engaging in naval fire. Notably, the Spanish commander Claude de Berlaymont, Lord of Haultepenne, was killed in this battle. The print is accompanied by a Latin caption and is numbered 192. Text is printed on the verso.

Guillaume Baudartius (Willem Baudart, 1565–1640) was a Dutch theologian, historian, and engraver known for his historical prints chronicling the military and religious conflicts of the Low Countries. His works served not only as illustrations but also as visual documentation of key moments in the struggle against Spanish rule. Baudartius collaborated with cartographers and publishers in Amsterdam, producing engravings that are both informative and stylistically refined.
