53 Guillaume Baudart (1565–1640) – Attack on Delfzijl by Spanish Troops under Verdugo – Etching (1621–1622)

This dramatic etching depicts the failed assault by Spanish troops under Francisco Verdugo on the fortified town of Delfzijl (Groningen) during the night of February 12–13, 1594. The image captures the intensity of the battle with infantry charges, ship attacks, and burning fortifications, offering a vivid record of the Eighty Years' War between the Spanish Crown and the Dutch Republic.
The engraving includes a Latin caption in four lines and is numbered 216 in the original publication. The reverse is printed with text in Latin. This etching was published in Amsterdam and is attributed to Willem Baudartius (Guillaume Baudart), a Dutch Protestant theologian, historian, and cartographer known for his politically charged and historically significant engravings. His visual chronicles of battles and sieges provided both artistic and historical documentation of the Dutch struggle for independence.
