41 Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697–1782) – Map of Western Europe Between Antiquity and Modernity / Germanie, France, Italie, Espagne, Isles Britanniques (1794)

”Germanie, France, Italie, Espagne, Isles Britanniques”
This large historical map of Western Europe illustrates the political geography of the region during a transitional period between Ancient Rome and the Early Middle Ages. The map spans from the British Isles and France to Italy, Spain, and parts of Eastern Europe, including Hungary and Dalmatia. It displays both ancient and modern toponyms—such as "Parisii" and "Paris"—providing a dual historical perspective invaluable to scholars and historians. Five different scale bars referencing measurement systems of antiquity are included in the design. The map was originally drawn in 1762 by the renowned French geographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville and published posthumously by Laurie and Whittle in London in 1794.
Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville was one of the most influential French cartographers of the 18th century. He is best known for his scientific approach to mapmaking, combining classical texts with modern geographic observations. D’Anville's maps were highly valued for their accuracy and clarity and were used throughout Europe for both academic and political purposes. His legacy marks a pivotal moment in the transition from decorative to scientific cartography.
