39 John Rapkin (1815–1876) & John Tallis (1817–1876) – Map of the Black Sea Region – Hand-Coloured Engraving (1850)

This richly detailed and beautifully engraved map of the Black Sea region depicts the surrounding territories of modern-day Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia. The map is highlighted with delicate original hand-colouring and is further adorned with six vignette illustrations featuring Odessa, Sebastopol, Constantinople, Sinope, Varna, and a view of the Bosphorus, bringing historical character to this geographic representation.

Drawn and engraved by the renowned cartographer John Rapkin, this map was published by John Tallis as part of The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, created for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The work is considered among the final decorative atlas series of the 19th century and is distinguished by its fine steel engravings and elegant ornamental borders.

John Rapkin was one of the most accomplished engravers of his time, known for integrating artistic detail with topographical accuracy.
