36 Fernando Alvares Seco (fl. 1561-1585) & Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) – Map of Portugal and the Algarve / Portugallia et Algarbia quae olim Lusitania (c. 1658)

”Portugallia et Algarbia quae olim Lusitania”
This beautifully engraved and hand-coloured map shows the entirety of Portugal and the Algarve (referred to as Portugallia et Algarbia), historically known as Lusitania. Rich in topographic detail, it names hundreds of towns, rivers, and regional divisions, with the coastline oriented to the west. The map is lavishly embellished with baroque elements, including ships sailing the Atlantic, compass roses, allegorical figures, and two large armorial shields representing Portugal and the Algarve.
Originally based on the cartographic work of Fernando Alvares Seco, a notable 16th-century Portuguese geographer, this version was engraved and published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. Janssonius was one of the foremost Dutch publishers of the Golden Age of cartography and contributed significantly to the atlases of the time, including those that rivaled the work of the Blaeu family.
The map reflects the growing maritime and political influence of Portugal during the early modern era and exemplifies the Dutch excellence in both geographical accuracy and artistic engraving.
