35 Matthäus Seutter (1678–1757) – Map of the Palatinate of the Rhine and Surrounding Ecclesiastical Territories - Germany (c. 1740)

This richly detailed hand-coloured map depicts the Palatinate of the Rhine (Electoratus Palatinus ad Rhenum) and its surrounding regions, including ecclesiastical territories such as the Archbishopric of Mainz, the Bishoprics of Worms and Speyer, and adjacent parts of the Holy Roman Empire. The map showcases the area’s political divisions, rivers, mountains, and major settlements, including cities such as Heidelberg, Mainz, and Speyer.
Lavishly ornamented with a baroque title cartouche and allegorical figures, the map blends geographic accuracy with the decorative flair of 18th-century German cartography. It was originally published by Matthäus Seutter, one of the leading mapmakers of the Augsburg school. Seutter, appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court in 1732, was known for producing highly decorative and authoritative maps during the golden age of German engraving.
