”Devon Shire by Rob Morden”

This rare hand-coloured county map of Devonshire was originally produced by Robert Morden and first published in 1695 for Camden’s Britannia. The edition presented here is from the 1708 posthumous printing. The map shows the county of Devon with its administrative boundaries, rivers, hills, and coastlines, as well as key market towns and connecting roads. Each hundred within the county is outlined in color. Morden’s maps are notable for being among the earliest to include roads based on the work of John Ogilby and to label market towns with clarity and consistency.

Robert Morden was a pioneering English cartographer and bookseller active in the late 17th century. He contributed significantly to the development of English regional mapping and was one of the first to make printed county maps affordable for a broader public. His county maps for Camden’s Britannia were engraved with a distinctive elegance and helped set a new standard for cartographic publishing in England.
