46 Paolo Fumagalli – Map of Ancient and Modern Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples - Italy (1830)

”Carte de la situation ancienne et moderne de Pompei ”
This striking dual-map composition by Paolo Fumagalli presents a comparative view of the ancient and modern topography surrounding Pompeii and the Bay of Naples. The main map depicts the contemporary 19th-century landscape, showing the city of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the archaeological site of Pompeii. The inset map at lower left reconstructs the region as it is believed to have appeared before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, including key ancient sites such as Herculaneum, Neapolis, and Stabiae. Both maps are delicately hand-coloured and engraved with topographical and architectural precision. The work was published in Florence around 1830 as part of Pompeja. Traité pittoresque, historique et géométrique, a richly illustrated volume documenting the rediscovery of Pompeii.
Paolo Fumagalli was an Italian artist and engraver active in the early 19th century, best known for his archaeological and topographical illustrations. His meticulous fieldwork and on-site sketches brought academic and visual clarity to the ruins of Pompeii, helping to shape European understanding of ancient Roman urbanism. His publication is among the earliest artistic surveys to combine scientific detail with romantic visual style.
