The main map depicts the contemporary 19th-century landscape, showing the city of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the archaeological site of Pompeii. The inset map at lower left reconstructs the region as it is believed to have appeared before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, including key ancient sites such as Herculaneum, Neapolis, and Stabiae. Both maps are delicately hand-coloured and engraved with topographical and architectural precision. The work was published in Florence around 1830 as part of Pompeja. Paolo Fumagalli was an Italian artist and engraver active in the early 19th century, best known for his archaeological and topographical illustrations.
