15 Guillaume Sanson (1633–1703) – Map of Ancient Troy and Northwestern Asia Minor / Troianum Regnum – Regions of Priam’s Nine Dynasties (1665)

”Troianum Regnum, Novem Dynastias Complectens”
Rare and finely engraved historical map of northwestern Asia Minor, depicting the legendary kingdom of Troy and its surrounding regions, including Mysia, Lydia, Troas, and the Troad. The map traces the mythical geography of Priam’s nine dynasties and includes classical place names such as Adrastea, Cilicia, and Pergamon. Decorative elements include a richly adorned cartouche with laurel, palm fronds, and classical figures, emphasizing the map’s commemorative nature. The map was compiled by Guillaume Sanson (son of Nicolas Sanson) and engraved by order of publisher Pierre Mariette. It was published in Paris in 1665.
Guillaume Sanson, son of the famed French royal cartographer Nicolas Sanson, continued the family's legacy of scholarly and historically informed cartography. The Sansons are credited with founding the French school of mapmaking, shifting the center of European cartography from the Netherlands to Paris in the 17th century. Their focus on scientific precision and classical history set new standards in thematic and historical cartography.
