12 John Rapkin (1813–1899) – Map of Central Brussels – Royal Palace, Hôtel de Ville, and Church of St. Gudule – Belgium (c.1851)

This highly decorative mid-Victorian map of Brussels was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin and published around 1851 by The London Printing and Publishing Company. Surrounded by an elaborate ornamental border, the plan is richly illustrated with vignettes engraved by J. Watkins, including iconic views of the Royal Palace, Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), Avenue in the Park, and the Church of St. Gudule. The map highlights the central layout of Brussels with shaded red buildings, showcasing the detailed urban structure of the city in the mid-19th century. It stands as part of the renowned Tallis series, considered the last great decorative atlas tradition of the 19th century. The work was published in London around 1851.

John Rapkin was an English cartographer and engraver known for his fine craftsmanship and decorative style. Working closely with publisher John Tallis, he created some of the most admired maps of the Victorian era. Rapkin’s works are recognized for combining precision with artistic vignettes, offering both geographical insight and visual elegance.
