This finely executed engraving titled Cascade de Jatkkojock près du Fleuve d'Alten depicts the dramatic and remote waterfall near the Alten River (Altaelva) in the far north of Norway. The cascade cuts through a narrow, rocky gorge, surrounded by densely wooded slopes and mountainous terrain, capturing the sublime and untamed beauty of the Scandinavian wilderness. The work was published in Stockholm, c. 1801

The original drawing was made by Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand, a Swedish count, general, and artist who documented his travels through Norway during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Skjöldebrand’s illustrated works were among the earliest artistic renderings of northern Norway and contributed significantly to the romantic European view of Nordic nature. The work was likely engraved and published by Charles Delén in Stockholm.
