This finely detailed copperplate engraving presents a panoramic view of the ancient necropolis of Thebes and the famed ruins of the Memnonium (the Ramesseum), along with architectural plans of royal tombs. The scene showcases monumental columns and crumbling temple structures, evoking the grandeur of Egypt’s pharaonic past. Two elevation views are accompanied by detailed floor plans, providing both artistic and archaeological insight. The work was published by Samuel Bagster in London, 1809.

The print originates from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du général Bonaparte by Dominique Vivant Denon, a pioneering visual record of Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition. Denon, invited by Bonaparte himself, joined the 1798 campaign and traveled along the Nile documenting temples, tombs, and monuments. His illustrations were among the first European depictions of many ancient Egyptian sites, laying the foundation for modern Egyptology.
