80 Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) – Temple of Isis Doorway, Dendera / Threshold of Divinity – Copperplate Engraving (c. 1801)

This copperplate engraving, created around 1801, depicts the richly adorned doorway of the Temple of Isis in Dendera, Upper Egypt. The sacred portal, framed by hieroglyphs and divine figures, leads into the inner sanctuary of one of the most revered temples of ancient Egypt. The architectural detail reveals the spiritual significance of the goddess Isis and reflects the ceremonial grandeur of Egyptian religious structures.
The work was published in Paris in 1802 by Pierre Didot l’aîné.
The print originates from Dominique Vivant Denon’s landmark publication "Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du général Bonaparte", a visual record of the Napoleonic expedition to Egypt. Denon, a polymath and close confidant of Napoleon, was the first to document these monuments extensively with both artistic and scientific rigor. His work inspired the Description de l'Égypte and helped ignite Europe’s fascination with Egyptology in the 19th century.
