158 Elias Magnus Fries (1794–1878) – Set of 2 Mushroom Studies – Boletus purpureus / Boletus cyanescens – Chromolithographs from Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar (1860–1866)

These detailed chromolithographs depict Boletus purpureus and Boletus cyanescens, two species of fungi studied by Elias Magnus Fries, the pioneering Swedish mycologist often referred to as the “father of mycology.” The plates were part of his seminal work Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar (“Sweden’s Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms”), created to educate both scientists and the general public on identifying and understanding the uses and dangers of various fungi. The work was published in Stockholm by P. A. Norstedt & Söner for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences between 1860 and 1866.
The publication was issued by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and P. A. Norstedt & Sons. The richly coloured illustrations were executed using chromolithography by A. J. Salmson, based on original drawings by Elias Pettersson and Petter Åkerlund. The work was issued in ten parts over seven years, combining scientific precision with visual clarity.
