This set of two hand-coloured engravings features a vibrant array of bird species from different parts of the world. Among them are the Paradise Bird (Paradisea speciosa), Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros), Turaco (Corythaeola persa), various toucans including the Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), the Great Black Woodpecker (Picus Martius), and others. These illustrations were created to accompany The Museum of Natural History, a monumental work designed to make zoological and botanical knowledge visually accessible to the Victorian public.The work was published by William Mackenzie in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London between 1859 and 1868.
William Mackenzie (1794–1868) was a 19th-century British publisher known for producing richly illustrated books, especially in the realms of natural history and geography. He operated publishing houses in London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. His hallmark was the use of finely engraved plates that were meticulously hand-coloured.
