126 Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666–1743) – The Rare Heron (Ardea vertea albo) – Hand-Coloured Engraving (c. 1733–1763)

This originally hand-coloured engraving is from Johann Leonhard Frisch's Vorstellung der Vogel in Teutschland und Beylaugffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben…und Nach Iheren Naturlichen Farben. The work was completed by his son Jodocus Leopold in 1763 and published by Friedrich Wilhelm Birnstiel in Berlin.
Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666–1743) was a German linguist, naturalist, and ornithologist whose lifelong dedication to documenting the avian life of Germany resulted in one of the most comprehensive bird books of the 18th century. His engravings—meticulously hand-coloured—are still valued today for their scientific and artistic merit. After his death, his sons completed and published his works between 1733 and 1763.
