This hand-coloured copperplate engraving presents a scientific botanical illustration of the almond tree (Amygdalus), showing its flower, ovary, seed structure, and cross-section of the nut. The elements are precisely labeled (A–H) and drawn in a clean, taxonomic style. The plate bears the Latin and French titles Amygdalus. Amandier, and is numbered Tab. 402, consistent with the style used in Tournefort's botanical compendiums.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a French botanist and physician, known for formalizing plant classification by genera and for his influence on Carl Linnaeus. As a professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, he published richly illustrated botanical works that combined field research with refined scientific illustration.
