11 Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) – Map of France / Nova Gallia Tabula – (1606)

”Nova Gallia Tabula”
This hand-coloured copperplate engraving, titled Nova Gallia Tabula, presents the kingdom of France as depicted in the early 17th century. It shows the country’s regions, major cities, rivers, and borders, along with parts of neighboring territories such as England (Anglia Pars), Spain (Hispania Pars), Germany (Germania Pars), and the Low Countries. The decorative cartouche and precise toponymy reflect the style of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The top margin labeled Von Franckreich indicates this copy was prepared for a German edition.
The map was originally designed by Gerardus Mercator, one of the most influential geographers of the Renaissance, and published posthumously in the 1606 edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. His scientifically accurate and visually refined maps were later continued by Jodocus Hondius, who acquired and republished Mercator’s plates with updated embellishments and hand colouring.
