”Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis ol: Palestina”

This hand-coloured copperplate map depicts the ancient Holy Land, referred to here as Terra Sancta or Terra Promissionis (the Promised Land), corresponding to historical Palestine. It includes key biblical regions such as Judea, Samaria, Galilee, and Idumea, along with notable locations like Jerusalem, the Dead Sea (Mare Mortuum), the Sea of Galilee (Mare Galilaeae), and the River Jordan. The title cartouche in the upper right corner reads Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis ol: Palestina, and the bottom border attributes the engraving to Petrus Kaerius, the Latinized name of Dutch engraver Pieter van den Keere.

Originally designed by Gerardus Mercator, the map was published posthumously around 1606 as part of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Mercator was one of the most influential geographers of the Renaissance, known for introducing the Mercator projection and shaping the future of mapmaking in Europe.
