10 Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) – Map of Saxony, Lusatia, and Meissen / Saxonia Superioris Lusatiae Misniaeque Descriptio – Germany - (c. 1606)

”Von Obersachsen, Meyssen vnd Lavsnitz”
The map depicts the historical regions of Upper Saxony, Lusatia, and Meissen in present-day eastern Germany. It includes numerous towns, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges, rendered in vivid hand-colouring. The Latin title Saxonia Superioris Lusatiae Misniaeque Descriptio appears in a decorative cartouche at the top left, while the map’s geographic detailing is typical of early 17th-century Dutch cartography. The work combines geographic accuracy with ornate visual presentation, reflecting the influence of Renaissance humanism on mapmaking.
Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) was one of the most influential cartographers in history. He introduced the revolutionary Mercator projection and was among the first to use the word “atlas” for a collection of maps. His legacy continued through later editions of his maps, published by Jodocus Hondius and his successors, who preserved and expanded Mercator's cartographic achievements for generations.
