24 Henricus Hondius (1597–1651) – Map of the Rhine, Waal, and Meuse Rivers / Descriptio Fluminum Rheni, Vahalis et Mosae – Netherlands & Germany - (c. 1630)

The map depicts the lower course of the Rhine, Waal, and Meuse rivers, spanning from the area near Rheno Berca (modern Rhenen) to Goricomium (Gorinchem), including the territories of Noviomagense (Nijmegen), the Betuwe region, and the river islands of Tiel and Bommel. It consists of two horizontal panels showing the branching waterways, surrounding towns, and regional borders. The title Descriptio Fluminum Rheni, Vahalis et Mosae is inscribed within a decorative cartouche, while the upper panel includes German labeling of the river systems.
This hand-coloured copperplate engraving was produced by Henricus Hondius, a prominent Dutch cartographer and publisher associated with the Blaeu and Mercator-Hondius schools. Known for his precision and artistic finesse, Hondius contributed significantly to 17th-century Dutch cartography and helped shape the visual identity of European maps of the time.
