This antique set of 12 steel engravings is from Friedrich Hofmann och Joseph Meyer’s ”Meyer's Universum”. The works were published by Joseph Meyer in Gotha, 1833-61.
Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) was a German publisher and entrepreneur. He founded the Bibliographisches Institut in 1826, which became famous for its high-quality encyclopedias and illustrated books. Meyer was dedicated to making knowledge accessible to the public and published the widely popular Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. His work significantly contributed to the spread of education and information in 19th-century Europe.
