King Louis-Philippe I (1773–1850) played a key role in the creation of "Galeries historiques de Versailles" by Charles Gavard. In the 1830s, he transformed the Palace of Versailles into a Museum of the History of France, commissioning artworks to illustrate the nation’s past. To document this collection, Gavard produced a series of engravings and lithographs using his innovative reproduction techniques. With the king’s support, the book became both an artistic album and a historical record, preserving France’s cultural heritage.
Charles Gavard (1794–1871) was a French engineer, publisher, and lithographer. He invented the diagraphe, a device for reproducing paintings. Gavard is best known for compiling and publishing the "Galeries historiques de Versailles," an extensive collection of engravings of the artworks in the Palace of Versailles. In recognition of his contributions, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1833.
