100 William Hogarth (1697–1764) – "Beer Street" – A Celebration of British Commerce – Engraving (1751)

Beer Street is one of William Hogarth’s iconic works, created in 1751, as part of a pair with Gin Lane. The engraving vividly portrays the positive effects of beer consumption in contrast to the moral decay depicted in Gin Lane. In this lively and optimistic scene, Hogarth shows a bustling London street where the working class is shown prospering in an environment of sobriety and health. Men and women are depicted enjoying beer in a vibrant, celebratory manner, with people laughing, working, and engaging in joyful activities. The engraving depicts beer as an emblem of good health, industry, and social harmony.
Hogarth uses his satirical style to emphasize the contrast with the squalor and destruction seen in Gin Lane. This piece represents a social commentary on the perceived virtues of beer over gin in the 18th century, a time when gin consumption was seen as contributing to crime and poverty.
