This striking 17th-century map presents the classical regions of Macedonia and Thessaly, offering a detailed geographic and political depiction rooted in Greco-Roman antiquity. Published in Leyden in 1697 as part of Philipp Clüver’s influential historical atlas, it reflects the scholar’s deep engagement with ancient geography through a Renaissance lens.

The map includes ancient place names such as Thermaicus Sinus (the Gulf of Thessaloniki), Pelagonia, Amphipolis, Orestis, and Pieria, as well as regional subdivisions like Illyridis Pars, Epiri Pars, and Thessalia. Decorative features include a cartouche with classical figures—one holding a spear, another a scroll—underscoring the intellectual and military legacy of the Macedonian region.

Clüver, often called the founder of historical geography, blended classical texts with early modern cartography, and this map remains a superb example of his legacy.
