7 Philipp Clüver (1580–1622) – "Sarmatia et Scythia: Russia et Tartaria Europaea" – Hand-Colored Engraving (1697)

This fascinating 17th-century map presents the lands historically known as Sarmatia and Scythia, encompassing parts of modern-day Eastern Europe and Western Russia. Published posthumously in Leyden in 1697, the map is attributed to Philipp Clüver, a pioneering scholar in historical geography.
Rich in both classical and early modern references, the map covers regions such as Scythia, Moesia, Sarmatia Asiatica, and Tartaria, as well as notable bodies of water like the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea), Mare Caspium (Caspian Sea), and Oceanus Sarmaticus (the Arctic Sea).
Decorative elements include a beautifully illustrated title cartouche and hand-colored political boundaries. This map not only offers geographic detail but also reflects the historical perceptions and mythologies tied to Eastern Europe and Eurasia in early modern European scholarship.
Philipp Clüver’s contributions laid the foundation for modern historical cartography, bridging classical antiquity with Renaissance and Enlightenment geography.
